Chrysalis Makes Official Selection at Aesthetica Film Festival

I’m very honoured that my short film Chrysalis has been selected as a finalist in the dance category in this year’s Aesthetica Film Festival. It’s the first time I’ve entered a project and been recognised by this benchmark BIFA and BAFTA qualifying festival - which is a truly exciting and significant opportunity, for both me and the work itself.

Chrysalis is a dance documentary project about strength, character and self expression. It’s a visual love letter to those who shine bright - even in moments filled with shadow. And directing this film was a real joy. It actually started as an idea for a small test shoot a few years ago and over time blossomed into something much more beautiful and meaningful than the loose threads of the initial concept.

I wanted to draw on some of the more confusing and isolating experiences of my childhood, when at times I was outcast just for being me - and then use those experiences to create an emotive piece of work which expresses through words and movement that - it’s ok to be you, whatever that looks and feels like. Not to fall in line with those who dampen your spirit and diminish your joy because you stand out in some way, different from the status quo.

The film is a beautiful culmination of talent and raw vulnerability, thanks to three wonderful dancers; Shevelle, Juan and Ami.

As a filmmaker, I love diving into stories that are bold, beautiful, and full of heart. And I’m particularly drawn to tales that explore the intricacies of being human. I think that captivating stories deserve to be told and shared in a sensitive, creative and passionate way - for me it’s just about staying curious and honest throughout the whole process.

I’m not afraid to dig into intimate subject matter and my goal is always to be as authentic as possible with the storytelling. At the end of the day, I want to create films that connect with people, and I think that's all about staying true to the story and the people who bring it to life.
